The Rocking Tenor Sax Of Eddie Chamblee

Yesterday night I went to Kawasaki to have a drink with three managers of vintage used LP shops (at Kouenji, Kawasaki and Kamata) - we could have a very enjoyable time and I could hear about some intersting “inside stories” in the used-vinyl-shops industries.

Just before the drink party, I was at the vinyl shop at Kawasaki, browsing tons of stocks. Then I happened to find an original issue of one of my favourite LPs - I checked the platter's condition, auditioned the sound, then I decided to buy the one.

Yes, this is the LP on Prestige label by that Eddie Chamblee recorded in 1964 - he also had recorded his leader albums on such labels as EmArcy and Black & Blue, but this Prestige LP would be his best album capturing the cream of his honking sax. The most famous track, A-1 “The Honeydripper” (a cover version of Joe Riggins' famous track), is an awesome up-tempo rocker with ultrafast honking. Other tracks including swingy slow ballads are also fine - his moody tenor with slap tongue and high notes are somewhat erotic.

Dayton Selby plays the hammond in the background - in my humble ears his style is not the kind of transcendentally-fast-moving fingers with soulful sounds. But his sound is truly compatible with Eddie Chamblee's honking sax - his organ is significantly remarkable!

As for the label on the platter, it is Yellow label with black print and “203 South Washington Ave., Bergenfield, NJ” address printed on top - it was against my expectation. Generally it is said that this Yellow label was used from 7141 thru 7320, then short-lived gold label followed, then the famous dark blue label was used. But this copy I acquired this time, actually has yellow label. Anyway this PRLP-7321 is one of the "in-the-middle-of-transition" releases I guess.

Eddie Chamblee (ts), Dayton Selby (org), Al Griffin (ds).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ on February 27, 1964.
